A Neil Roake kind of weekend

Hello! I’m back from our semi long weekend in Durban. We went down to shoot a pretty awesome wedding and while we were there we stayed at Neil Roake’s amazing Boutique Bungalows called The Concierge. We also ate at two of his restaurants, and bought 3 of his books we hadn’t got yet so it just seemed fair to dedicate this whole post to him, i’ll save the wedding stuff for later.

We had eaten at the Freedom Cafe before and own two of his books (Life is a beach cottage and Taste Freedom) and have always been impressed with the effort in the details, beautiful design and amazing colour. His hotel is no different. As soon as we checked into our room we left our bags outside and grabbed the camera before we destroyed anything. I loved this room so so much! I loved the cool Egg Design furniture, the wooden detail in the head board and the shower that feels like rain pouring down on your head. I loved the Colleen Eitzeen gown (from the Space – did you know that was his thing too?? he’s one busy guy), and I especially loved the mini bar which has to be the best mini bar i’ve ever had the privilege of being tempted with (We totally ate the Wasabi Peanuts). Then of course the outside balcony which I wanted to steal and take home in my luggage – all the furniture and succulents and pot plants were magnificent! Take a look!

The night we arrived we went to one of his lovely Italian restaurants called Craft Trattoria. We met up with some friends there and had such a great evening, eating delicious spaghetti in a bag, risotto volcanos, and Bobs Your Uncle Wine, which is amazing inside and  out, but slightly lethal if you drink it all yourself. (At the end the waitress told me she reads Emmajanenation! It was the cherry on the top of a good night, I love meeting readers, especially away from home. (Thanks for saying hi!)

A little bit of the Bobs Your Uncle influence seen above.

Lastly we had breakie with the same lovely friends Jade & Craig on Sunday morning at The Freedom Cafe, the boys got the fathers day special with “boerewors lollipops” – awesome!

Boeri Lollipops!

He has another restaurant called Larney’s in Gateway which we’re going to have to try next time. I recommend all these places if you’re tripping to Durban anytime soon. Check out all the respective websites:

I’m from durbs and quite a few of my friends work for neil at his studios. The concierge and freedom cafe are so awesome and I love hanging there!! I’ve had such a bad experience at craft thoug, which is such a bummer cause the decor is so awesome, and was designed by friends. Gotta say he’s taking over the country though! 🙂 glad you had a gOod stay in durbs! When you tweeted about waking up to church bells I knew where you were 😀
