Last week I tried out the newest Vegan eatery in town called Conscious 108 in Greenside. I have to be honest I wasn’t really sure what to expect of a Vegan eatery. Was everything going to taste like wheat grass shots?
We walked into the cute interior and started off our lunch with a bright red Apple and Beetroot juice and a chat to one of the lovely owners Misha.
Conscious 108 was started by three Vegan Buddhist’s about three months ago with the aim of changing the face of Vegan eats. Everything about this place is approachable, intentional and delicious. They’re catering for the fussy vegans and the regular diners (like us!) too.
It was chilly Joburg day so we started with a curried butternut soup (delish!) followed by wraps. I had something called a Chimmichanga (a yummy red bean wrap with hummus, avo and non dairy cheese), Dylan had a crispy Tofu wrap which has totally redeemed Tofu for him, for life!
They have so many options on their menu from vegan burgers and hotdogs (which I have to go back and try) to salads, sandwiches and daily specials.
Their restaurant statement is that they’ve “taken the best of what you love about food, and fashioned it into comfortable, gratifying, love conscious treats and meals”… and this rang so true. Everything was plant-based but totally delicious.
For dessert we were treated to their vegan carrot cake (which was absolutely incredible), Soya handmade ice cream and their obviously famous peanut butter snap bars (Oh my!).
If you’re looking for something a little bit different give Conscious 108 a try. You won’t find any meat or dairy but you will find some incredible flavours and a place with a philosophy of kindness and good food.
Find them at 108 Greenway, Greenside, Johannesburg.
