The air is fresh, warm and smells like freshly mown grass. Spring has sprung and it’s time to shed our winter skin.
This is my favourite time of year… this dramatic change from Winter to Spring-Summer. I itch to banish the clutter and re-style the spaces in my home, find new fresh summery recipes to try and to host dinner parties outside in the garden under our bistro lights.
I’m filled with a new energy. I want to get outdoors, seize the moment and live every day as if it’s a wonderful occasion with any excuse to celebrate.
I want my big wooden table outside surrounded by good friends, good food and good wine. No time schedules, no rushing, no pretenses… just feeling happy and at home.
I want to make time for a looong lunches or early dinners when friends come early to help make a salad over a glass of wine and spend time with us in our home.
We had our first summer dinner party last week and while we had grand plans of a warm summer evening outside the typical Joburg summer rains started!
It didn’t matter though! We had wine!
We bought a selection of Maison wine from Weylandts and I gave our guests the challenge of pairing each one with a different course of the meal… and you know nothing from Weylandts is average! This wine is good!
Everybody went all out! This is what they came up with:
- Canapes: Chenin Blanc with Pumpkin Bellini’s with Ricotta and caramelized onions, Necterine slices, blue cheese topped with pecan nuts, Fried Goats cheese, Chevin with honey and thyme, Aubergine slices with garlic yoghurt.
- Starters: Shiraz with Duck Breast and roasted cherry salad.
- Mains: Viognier with Seared Sesame crusted Tuna with chilli and ginger dressing.
- Dessert: Straw Wine (Dessert Wine) with an Affogato (A dollop of Ice cream community ice cream topped with a shot of hot espresso).
We had so much fun tasting all the wines and seeing what everybody had come up with, taking every opportunity to toast to life.
Be sure to watch the little video right at the end of what we got up to. Made with love by Orpen Films (who are our favourite videographers!).
“While travelling is my passion, the comforting memory of a meal, of intimate moments shared with good friends over good wine always draws me home”
Now watch this! You get a proper feel of everybody cooking in our tiny kitchen, the sizzle of the duck breasts and flow of the wine ; )
