I’m celebrating (just over) a year of quitting my job and properly starting my own business with Dylan.
It’s been a wonderful year where i’ve felt inspired, free and on a high but also stretched, stressed and challenged.
We’ve worked flipping hard (you’ll notice the lack of blogging at times) but have always felt like the hard work is rewarded.
We’ve met some incredible people and travelled to places we didn’t even know existed.
We’ve made a lot of mistakes but we’re learning and growing and challenging ourselves to be better and to give our clients something incredible.
This was part of an enquiry we received this week and it feels like the cherry on the top of a good year.
“Hey guys, your photography moves us... I found myself in tears looking at a stranger’s wedding...”
and I think this is all we want.
We want to MOVE people. We want to take the way you feel about a person and show you how that looks.
I’m excited for another year of this. More stretching, more challenges, more moving people and moving ourselves.
I’m hoping that next year will be slightly more chilled so I can feed Emmajanenation too - there are so many things I want to do but I guess it's one thing at a time.

I have seriously neglected our photography blog in the last two months. Between shooting and editing and also maintining EJN I just haven't gotten around to publishing our latest work, and there really is some pretty work to publish. This is a shoot I did a few months ago with the prettiest pregnant woman i've ever seen (bar my sisters ;) ) and she's pregnant with twins! Bailey invited me around to her stunning apartment in Parktown North to get some casual, comfortable, non-maternity maternity photos. We just hung out with them while they made tea, ate croissants and lounged around in the warm winter sun.
I'm so happy with the way they came out, they just feel cozy and real and document exactly how her and husband are in real life and how they felt at the time.
Don't you think she looks similar to Carey Mulligan? They are going to have damn cute babies.
Ps. Go here to check out Bailey's beautiful blog, she has the most amazing taste. I follow her on Pinterest too!

After reading this post i've started experimenting a bit with multiple exposures, something i've always been fascinated by, and happy to discover I can make these beautiful images in my 5D Mark III.
Dylan was my first subject and the results got me so excited I want to do a whole series of images using this method.
I really love how this picture came out, mostly because of the magic that's happening between Dylan's beard and the autumn leaves. In black and white it feels so lovely and wintery and I'm thinking this picture would make for an awesome print in our house somewhere.

This last weekend Dylan and I shot a wedding in Mpumalanga at arguably one of the coolest venues in the country called The Cowshed. We took our newly engaged friends with us, so they could check it out and also to road trip up to Limpopo afterwards to go see another awesome spot we shot at in late December last year.
The weekend went by so quickly but we soaked up the pine fresh air and beautiful views of Mpumalanga and Limpopo as much as we could.
We ended off our trip in a beautiful sleepy little town called Haenertsburg where we stayed in a log cabin on a lake, ate local pizza and even managed to squeeze in a little shoot for our friends. We couldn't have done it in a better setting! I'm excited to share more of these pictures soon.
If you're interested, Haenertsburg is about 4 hours from Joburg and the placed we stayed at is called Stanford lake.

I'm getting very excited about Kinfolk Vol. 7, and waiting with baited breath (as per usual) when Warm & Glad will announce they have stock. I am in love with these dreamy images popping up everywhere of these huge ice-cream cones full of beautiful flowers! Like clockwork the Northern hemisphere is exploding with beautiful spring images while my garden already has crispy autumn leaves scattered on the grass. I love this time of year, and i'm pretty excited for some cooler weather. Shot by Parker Fitzgerald and styled by Amy Merrick. Images via

Sorry it's been quiet over here at EJN, i've been putting all my blogging energy into our photography blog this week and it's looking amazing! Dylan built us a new website, so if you have a chance please go check it out and let me know what you think.
There's also a lot of new work up (and still a few weddings we haven't blogged yet). We kicked off our new season (our working season is from August - May - how bizarre) on 3 August and have already shot two lovely weddings (with two really wonderful couples). This season is looking flipping busy but I think it's going to be amazing.
These are some sneak previews of the two weddings we've shot this month. There's more on the blog!
To see the full wedding story video of Lucia & Fanie's wedding go here. I was fooling around with their pictures and some music and this was the result. It's really worth the watch ; )

Sorry for the radio silence over here this week. I've been editing non stop trying to get work out before we go on holiday this friday. We're going on a little Cape escape, starting with a hike and camp out on the Table Mountain reserve with a few other bloggers this weekend. I'm so excited for a change of scenery and a break from the two glossy screens that I spend all my time with.
We've been working hard, and I have so many nice shoots I still want to share with you guys. In the past few weeks we've been doing a lot of different work, which has been a wonderful break from shooting weddings. Don't get me wrong, I love weddings but it's so nice mixing it up with other types of shoots too. Here are a few sneak peeks of our latest work:
A maternity shoot that looks nothing like a maternity shoot.
A fashion look book for a local boutique.
and a really fun, no cheese, couple shoot.
Now I just have to get around to actually blogging it all!

These are our very good friends Martin & Judy. They got engaged at the top of Kilimanjaro at the beginning of the year and are getting married next year January. A few weeks ago we drove up to Limpopo to scout out some cool non-wedding venue places to get married and I think they've settled on this place in Haenertsburg, Limpopo. While we were there, we stayed at a beautiful log cabin on Stanford Lake, and decided to squeeze in a little impromptu engagement shoot. I fashioned Judy a little flower crown out of an arrangement I found in the cabin and we headed into the woods. I think it turned out quite nicely. The light was beautiful on the lake, Judy serenaded our photo taking on her Ukulele (you gotta here them sing and play together! It's Magic!) and we ended off the night at the Pot & Plough for pizza (The only place to eat if you're in and around Haenertsburg. It was also a tasting of sorts as I think they're going use them to cater their wedding).
If you want to see a few more pics from this session or some of our other work go here.

If it's okay with you guys I'd like to put a little bit more of my photography work here, just a small handful of pictures from each shoot which I really loved. I promise that EJN won't become a wedding blog, just a few favourite stills about once a week. Is that alright?
These are from one of the prettiest, most detailed weddings we've ever shot at Arts on Main (one of our favourite venues to shoot at). The theme was old school botanical and the details were lovely and so different to any other wedding we've been to.
They also had the coolest photo booth. It was just tons of beautiful botanical prints stuck together and a square of astro turf to stand on (we took it around the city with us when we did the couple shoot and it made for a lot of fun photos). To see more of this lovely wedding or our other work go here

I'm pretty excited for the release of Mood Indigo (or L'Ecume des Jours - the French title) featuring the loveliest Audrey Tautou. I think she is the prettiest French actress, and she always plays the most interesting characters (Amelie, Coco Chanel). This movie is no different. She plays Chloe, a woman who on her honeymoon develops an illness that can only be treated by surrounding her with flowers. It looks beautiful, bizarre and tragic, and it's all in french.
