A few cool things happening this weekend in Joburg (starting tonight, because thursday is the new friday).
1. Night of 1000 drawings is on tonight at the Scibono centre in Newtown. Tickets are only R30 and you could score yourself a nice piece of art for R100 (all proceeds going to an amazing cause). Read more about it here.
2. The night market is on at Market on Main tonight.
3. Food Wine Design starts tomorrow on the roof of Hyde Park Corner. If you like good food, incredible wine and buying beautiful designed things this fair is a feast. Tickets are R80.
4. Nestlé SA and their digital agency, NATIVE VML, are celebrating the announcement of Android™ KitKat with Chocnology with an exhibition of 3D-printed sculptures made entirely out of chocolate. Ten talented local artists were recruited to design the edible artworks using Android™ KitKat as their inspiration. The exhibition is on at MOAD (which is a flipping cool venue we shot at about a month ago) from tonight 7th November until Sunday 10th November.
5. The Rosebank Rooftop market has moved and in it's place arrives the Finders Keepers market, launching this Sunday, the 10th November. I'm hoping for a lot of cool vintage stalls but we'll see? Really hoping for something different.
and that's it for my first edition of "Weekend recreation".. have an amazing weekend everybody!

Guys it's almost time for the Sanlam Investments FoodWineDesign Fair! This is one of my favourite events of the year. I always taste something i've never had before (like these stuffed zucchini flowers above), always find a new delicious wine to stock our racks with and always find soo many beautiful desirable design objects.
It's back on the roof of Hyde Park Corner from 8 - 10 November 2013.
Friday 8 November: 12pm - 10pm
Saturday 9 November: 10am - 10pm
Sunday 10 November: 10am - 4pm
All the favourites are back this year including Anatomy design, Craft Liquor merchants, Inverroche Distillery (Gin!), Idiom wines, Dear Rae, Pichulik, Skinny laMinx and sooo many more. For a full list of exhibitors go visit the FWD site here.
I'm running an incredibly cool giveaway this year. I'm giving away rugs from Barrydale Hand Weavers and 5 x sets of tickets to the fair with one of the winners receiving a R3000 Sanlam unit trust investment towards your ULTIMATE, once in your lifetime food, wine or design trip/experience.

Is it your dream to go champagne tasting in France? or perhaps to go on the ultimate foodie tour of all the best spots in New York City? I have so many of these food and wine fantasies. I would love to go back to Babylonstoren (this time for a full week of relaxing, eating and drinking), or perhaps go back to Italy , stay in a Villa and spend a few days sampling the best cheese and wine of the region.
Whatever your dream is, this is your opportunity to get a bit of head start in saving up for it ; )
1. Tell me what your ultimate once in your lifetime Food Wine or Design dream is in the comments section below.
2. Tweet about it for an extra entry using the hashtag #EJN_FWDTweet #EJN_FWD
I will draw all the winners in 2 weeks time on the 7th November (just in time for the fair!).

Before the weekend is over I thought I should get a post out about the wonders of Food Wine Design so you’re not angry with me for blogging about it on Monday when it’s all over ; ) and if you've missed out!
If you have been to this event before it’s a huge improvement from last year, it’s bigger and there’s far more variety as well as a lot of new things I hadn’t heard of or seen before. The food, wine and design are all in separate tents so you can start in one section and move along naturally.
So let’s start with food. We ate. A lot.
We started at the Dim Sum Vin stand where they have 4 different dim sum platters that are paired with two glasses of wine. We had one each and got to taste a whole lot of bite size combinations. The steamed dim sum (green) was a lot tastier than the cold option (blue), but the colder option had a much nicer wine! It was a Chardonnay from Plasir De Merle, and I do love chardonnay.
We then had a plate of stuffed Zucchini flowers at the Mastrantonio stand paired with wine imported from Italy (delicious flavours!) these were really interesting, something definitely to try out!
We also had a small Kobe Style beef burger (a bit pricy at R50 a burger the size of a Slyder but Dylan educated me that Kobe beef is world renowned as some of the best Beef in the world). Anyway, it was quite delicious and something Ron Swanson would be proud of. It was basically a bun and a patty with nothing else. Find this at the Braeside Butcher stand.
For pudding we had a haagen dazs mint ice-cream and brownie combination, not the most adventurous but it was pretty tasty.
Moving on to design. We perused a lot of stalls but these were my favourites.

We bought this dark horse leather strap for a special home project.

Dylan bought me this 'heart of gold' ring which i've been coveting for a long time.
above: Mat blac - very cool men's accessories like ipad covers and wallets.
I highly recommend going to the fair, just remember your credit card ; )

While I was still in bed this morning hanging onto a few more minutes of shut-eye Dylan brought me this package that had just arrived (and I looove courier packages - those white paper parcels get me so excited). I opened it up to find a beautifully crafted invitation to Food Wine Design, complete with a handsome bread board from Merchants and Makers (who have an impossibly cool logo).
So now this invitation is extended to you to come see a selection of handpicked local food artisans, cheese makers, brewers and designers on the roof of Hyde Park Corner on the 25-27 November. See you there. You'll find me at the cheese counter ; )
All the details of the event are on the site, including who's going to be there, how much it will cost and the fact that you will get in for half price if you arrive on your bicycle! (lovely!)

Dear Rae have just launched their beautiful new Luxury range and got Gareth Hubbard to help create this beautiful lookbook for them. There are so many beautiful pieces here that I would love for christmas.

From the same incredible people who brought you Food. Wine. Design. now for the first time bring you the Winter Art Fair. This one is really special as it combines food, wine and art at the Nirox foundation (which is a 15 hectare piece of land in the Cradle of humankind). I hadn't heard of it before but the pictures look amazing. It's just this WIDE open expanse of land with sculptures and interesting things around every corner.
All the top chefs and wine makers from Franshhoek are flying up to cook us amazing food and serve us their best wines and I just can't wait! I'm going with a whole bunch of friends and thinking of bringing some picnic blankets so we find a nice spot to chill and eat and enjoy the surroundings.
It's on this weekend 4th & 5th May. R100 at webtickets. Go here for more information on how to get there.

It's that time of year again when the roof of Hyde Park turns into a feast of culinary and design delights. I've been to food. wine. design every year since it started and it really is a great event. Dylan and I bought some awesome wines from some small wine farms last year and they were all delicious so I can't wait to find some new one's again this year.
// I have 3 sets of double tickets to giveaway to the event //
So leave me a comment and a high-five and i'll pick the winners next week thursday. Cool? : ) cool.
It all goes down next weekend 23 - 25 November at Hyde Park Corner. For more details go visit their website.
This competition is now closed.
